San Francisco 49ers And Joe Cool

 

National Football League fans are well aware with the sterling reputation in the San Francisco 49ers franchise. With five Super Bowl trophies to their credit, the team had among the NFL’s greatest dynasties throughout the 1980s and early 1990s, thanks to an innovative style of offensive and wonderful play from the quarterback position. And when we say dynasties, we mean dynasty on the highest order! Over the course of a sixteen year time frame beginning in 1984, the group won ten games or more during each season with such NFL greats as Steve Young, and Jerry Rice. For sheer star power, although, and four of those five Super Bowl wins, the great Joe Montana can’t be overlooked.

The iconic quarterback

Joe Montana began his NFL career with the 49ers in 1979, and remained there via 14 seasons, prior to spending his last two seasons – which ended in 1994 – as quarterback for the Kansas City Chiefs. He is possibly best known for his ability to rally his team from the utter depths of defeat and lead them to victory with spectacular, breathtaking last quarter drives. Though he was often a highly composed field general, his legend has grown more than time for the point where many whose memories have faded now think on the 49ers as having often been behind in their games. In truth, Montana had a total of 31 total comeback drives within the fourth quarter of games. It just seems like more in hindsight mainly because so a lot of of them were in high pressure championship matches.

Winning Super Bowls

The first of Montana’s four Super Bowl runs was maybe also the most memorable. The 1981 season culminated in a matchup with Dallas in January of 1982, using the NFC title and a proper to represent the conference in Super Bowl XVI on the line. At the end with the game, using the 49ers trailing by six, Montana engineered a drive that resulted in a game-winning touchdown pass with less than a minute to spare. The pass’s reception by Dwight Clark has since passed into NFL Lore as “The Catch” – and is considered one of the greatest plays inside the history of professional football. The 49ers would go on to defeat the Bengals and win that year’s Super Bowl, with Montana earning MVP honors for his performance. The 49ers would later go on to win Super Bowls XIX, XXIII, and XXIV with Montana as quarterback. By the time of that fourth championship, Montana had collected his third Super Bowl MVP award. To date, he is the only NFL player to have enjoyed that honor.

Legacy

Joe Cool’s legacy with all the 49ers cannot be simply summed up. Numerous men and women today remember him more for that quarterback controversy that existed in his final few years with the group than for your good plays, startling wins, and championships that the group enjoyed with him under center. It was perhaps fitting that, when the 49ers eventually traded him in 1993 towards the Kansas City Chiefs, Montana would go on to lead them towards AFC Championship game in that year. Joe just didn’t know how to lose.
