Football for youth has been around for many years. Both of my boys play on a youth football team in a small town in Ohio. Their father is the coach for their team. When their father was a boy he played on the same football team and his dad coached his team.
Every Saturday our youth football teams have a game and practice 5 evenings a week. Why I allow this sport to consume me for two months during the fall sometimes amazes me, but then I really know why. Football taught my boys lessons that they could not learn in the class room or by rough housing at home. These lessons that are reinforced continually every fall are lessons the boys will remember throughout their lives.
Hard Work Pays Off
Every night my boys are pushed to work hard and do their very best. Their coaches are very blunt when they tell the kids that if they want to play they need to work hard. The coaches sticking to their guns teaches the boys quickly that the coaches are not joking. By the end of the season, almost every child at practice is trying his very best. This is because if the coach sees them doing their best during practice, they will get more time to play in the actual game.
You Don’t Always Win, but Winning Feels Good!
I do not sugar coat life to my kids because I don’t think that helps them with life’s struggles. Parents are setting their kids up for failure in life when they congratulate their kids for almost accomplishing something. Have you ever been congratulated by your boss for almost making a sale?
Not winning every time is a precept that my boys understand. Losing is not something they have learned to like. Giving it their best to win is a lesson my boys have learned. To learn this lesson is something that will help them the rest of their lives.

Youth Football h as taught my boys the value of team work. They have learned that sometimes it takes a group of people to make things happen. Asking for help is something my kids have learned to do if they cannot accomplish a task on their own.
This is something that will help my kids in their adult lives. Working well with others is an important aspect of many jobs. In the work place, teamwork is a valuable skill. Employees with a teamwork mentality will make their companies more profitable.
Be Accountable For your Actions
Many children have a hard time being accountable for their actions. They are quick to blame someone else for their actions and give an excuse for their actions.
Football has taught my kids to be accountable for their actions. They need to own up to it if they do something that causes the team to get penalized. There is no blaming others.
Responsibility
Football has taught my children that they must be responsible. To show up every day in full equipment for games and practice is required. If not they will have to suffer the consequences (i.e. jogging).e. Jumping Jacks). This is an lesson that as the child reaches adulthood, they will fall back on time and again.
